3-Manifold groups and finite quotients

Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss profinite completions of 3-manifold groups. I will explain a result of profinite almost rigidity, namely, that finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold groups are determined up to finitely many possibilities by their profinite completions.

 

Bio: Yi Liu is a professor at Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research (BICMR) at Peking University. His research interest lies primarily in 3-manifold topology and hyperbolic geometry. He received his Ph.D. degree in 2012 from the University of California at Berkeley. In 2017, he received the Qiushi Outstanding Young Scholar Award. He has been a principal investigator of the NSFC Outstanding Young Scholar since 2019. He is an invited speaker of ICM 2022.
