Summary: The purpose of this series of lectures is to present recent results on the representation theory of finite reductive groups using constructions from the geometry and from higher categories. Replacing representations by local systems, one obtains a broad range of techniques coming from sheaves on topological spaces to work with representations, including the usual induction and restriction but also their geometric generalisation due to Deligne--Lusztig and Lusztig. We will also explain how these methods give rise to a category of representations which is generic, hence fulfilling Broué's dream to study representations of GLn(x) where x is an indeterminate.
